Continued Explorations

I loved the blog post previously so I am excited to do it again today. I choose Mauna!

Biographical Information

Moana is a Disney movie that came out in 2016. Moana was directed by Ron Clements, John Musker, and Don Hall. There are seven original songs in Moana. I choose "How far I'll go". "How far I'll Go" is written by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Lin-Manuel Miranda was born in New York on January 16, 1980. He is an American actor, composer, lyricist, and writer. He is best known for mixing classical music with a now and day twist. Miranda did this with Hamilton's hip-hop original about Alexander Hamilton.  Later in 2016, he was contributing to the movie Moana. Auli’i Cravalho is the voice for Mauna and sang the song we are reviewing today. To my surprise (like many) she is only 16. Craviho is the youngest actress to voice a Disney princess, she is also the first Polynesian Disney princess. Cravalho is going places with her beautiful voice.
What role does this specific work serve?
"How far I'll go" is a song about dreams, the future, and wants. Moana is a very strong independent kid. This song outlines the independence that Moana has through the movie. Moana makes it clear that she is ready for dramatic changes in her life and no one will stop her. At this point in the movie, she is making a decision to leave her island even though it's a hard decision. this song gives a real inside look into what the main character is facing/ going through.
Social Commentary
Typically a Disney movie will have several moral lessons throughout the storyline. In Moana, the main moral lesson is having patience. This is such an important lesson in this day and age. this generation gets everything in a split second. Computers and technology have made many people's patience go out the window. This is very sad so a good lesson to have projected to our littler generations. In the movie, patience is the key to happiness. That belief is tossed around the whole movie a few examples are Moana has to learn to have enough patience to sail the boat, or when Maui has to be patient and gain trust towards Moana on their journey together. patience is key to happiness.
My opinion
I love this movie not only for our younger generation but for the parents raising that generation. like I mentioned before people don't have enough patience anymore and I do this this movie helps reteach that. this movie was expertly thought out and the graphics are amazing for a cartoon the character voices are amazing with octaves and expression. all of the music in this movie has a higher tempo keeping everyone dancing and engaged. overall this movie is light playful and fun.

  1. Hi Jade,
I loved this review. One of my all-time favorite places in the world is Maui. Reading this blog makes me crave a trip there soon. I didn’t realize the singer of "How Far I’ll Go" was only 16! Her voice is very mature and so clear. Your description of the story behind the song was empowering. I don’t have small children, so I haven’t kept up with Disney movies like I used to. Your blog helped me envision what the movies was about. Your blog was well written, organized and perfectly descriptive. Thanks for sharing.
